Welcome Ethan Batchelar

Welcome Ethan Batchelar

We had a chat with Batch's newest recruit, Ethan Batchelar, Assistant Underwriter.

Welcome to Batch. Tell us a little about your background and what brought you into insurance.

I recently graduated with a Bachelor of Business in October 2025 and have already gained several years of experience in the insurance industry. I was drawn to insurance because it offers a combination of relationship building, problem-solving, and continuous learning. I'm excited to continue expanding my knowledge and developing my career at Batch.

What attracted you to the role and the opportunity to move from broking into underwriting?

After several years in broking, I was looking for a new challenge and an opportunity to broaden my industry experience. Working as a broker gave me valuable insight into risk and client relationships, but I became increasingly interested in the underwriting side of the business. Joining Batch allows me to develop new skills while gaining a deeper understanding of risk assessment and underwriting decisions.

Having worked on the broker side, what do you think makes a positive experience when dealing with an underwriter?

From a broker's perspective, clear communication and timely responses are incredibly important. An underwriter who is approachable, helpful, and willing to work collaboratively can make a significant difference to the overall experience. Strong relationships are built on trust, reliability, and consistent service.

What are you most looking forward to learning as you begin your underwriting career?

I'm looking forward to learning more about how different risks and trips are assessed and rated. I'm also keen to develop a deeper understanding of the various Accident & Health policies and the differences in coverage between them. Building this technical knowledge will help me grow as an underwriter and better support brokers.

What's one thing you've learned in insurance so far that surprised you?

One thing that surprised me about insurance is the importance of building strong relationships. Before entering the industry, I didn't realise how much trust and communication contribute to successful outcomes. I've learned that relationships are just as important as technical knowledge.

If a broker picked up the phone to you tomorrow, what can they expect from you?

They can expect someone who is attentive, approachable, and responsive. I aim to communicate clearly and provide support wherever possible. Most importantly, they can expect a professional and engaging conversation.

What has your first impression of the Batch team been? My first impression of the Batch team has been extremely positive. Everyone has been welcoming, supportive, and willing to share their knowledge. It's a collaborative and engaging environment that has made the transition into my new role very enjoyable.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work when you're not talking insurance? I enjoy staying active and challenging myself both physically and mentally. I spend my free time surfing with friends and family, going to the gym, playing chess, and practicing yoga. These activities help me maintain a healthy balance while keeping me engaged and motivated.
